How I Created the ArmLock Brace

Mark Laurensse

When I treated my patients with chronic tennis elbow, I was surprised to see, and feel, just how tight the dorsal forearm muscles were. For an experiment, (yes, I experimented with my patients), I held them in this stretch for a solid 20-30 minutes. Note how the fingers are tightly held in flexion. This stretch worked fantastic! The development of the ArmLock brace came several years after discovering how well this low-load prolonged stretch worked.

My wife, Dianne, had a foot condition called plantars Fasciitis.  I gave her a special sock that holds the foot and toes extended to help stretch out this plantar fascia. An interesting tid-bit is that this sock was not invented by a medical professional, but by a mailman who had this condition. This sock, called the Strassburg Sock, has been validated through many studies. Goofing around, I put this sock on my arm and had my EUREKA moment! This is how I stretch my patients! And so, I converted the sock to a glove and added a rigid component to help hold the elbow straight. And so the ArmLock Brace was born.
